The Gospel of Mark: Watch and Pray
As Jesus approaches the cross, the weight of what lies ahead presses heavily upon Him. In the garden of Gethsemane, we see Jesus turn to His Father in intimate prayer, calling Him “Abba”—a deeply personal expression of trust and relationship. Jesus asks if there is another way, yet ultimately submits fully to the Father’s will. Meanwhile, the disciples—exhausted from an intense and emotional week—struggle to stay awake. Three times Jesus finds them sleeping and urges them to “watch and pray” so that they will not fall into temptation. In this powerful moment, Jesus shows us both the necessity of prayer and the danger of spiritual complacency. When life grows heavy or our spirits grow weary, the temptation to become spiritually drowsy is real. Like the disciples, we must be reminded to stay alert. Through prayer and watchfulness, we remain anchored in the Father’s will and prepared for the temptations we face.
