The Gospel of Mark: Authentic Devotion
Many of us long for a faith that’s real; not just words or appearances, but genuine devotion to Jesus. In Mark 12:38–44, Jesus contrasts the hollow devotion of the scribes with the sincere, sacrificial devotion of a poor widow. While the scribes gave large sums to be seen and admired, the widow quietly gave all she had. Jesus flips the script and shows us that authentic devotion isn’t casual, it’s costly. Everything we have ultimately belongs to God; we are stewards, not owners. Our giving reveals where our hearts truly lie. When we trust God as our provider, we’re freed to live generously and sacrificially. Because of Jesus’ great generosity toward us, we’re invited to follow His example and live lives of worship, discipleship, and mission through sacrificial devotion.
