The Gospel of Mark: Fighting Self-Reliance

It’s easy to feel strong when we’ve just come off a spiritual high—like we’ve seen God move and we’re ready to take on the world. But then life hits, and we realize we’ve started relying more on ourselves than on Jesus. That’s what happened with the disciples. After seeing Jesus in His glory, they couldn’t cast out a demon—not for lack of effort, but because they were operating in their own strength. Jesus points out that real faith means real dependence—not just when things are hard, but all the time. Whether you’re exhausted from striving, carrying doubts like the desperate father, or coasting on past wins, Jesus is calling you back to full trust in Him.
